Despite thousands of years of use by humans, Quitobaquito Springs and pond are home to several kinds of animals and plants found nowhere else in the world– endemic species. These days it has become a truly strange oasis in walking distance of an enormous border wall and an important Mexican highway. Through the slats of the border wall, you can watch the traffic

One of the endemic species at Quitobaquito Springs/pond is the Sonoyta or Quitobaquito pupfish (Cyprinodon eremus). It’s found at the springs and pond, and in two short perennial sections of the Sonoyta River just south of the springs/pond.
